The hip is the largest ball-and-socket joint in the body. Despite it’s durability it can be affected by degenerative processes such as arthritis or injury. Muscles and tendons around the hip can be injured by repetitive activities or the bones of the hip can fracture in falls. Problems with the hip can sometimes be confused with back pain since both can present as pain in the hip. Stiffness, trouble walking or exercising, and difficulty putting on shoes and socks can be other symptoms of hip problems. Common problems include bursitis, arthritis, osteonecrosis, fractures, and tendinitis.
